Think you’ve got what it takes to succeed in the fast-paced world of Media? Former student Lauren Ashworth studied Media at Brooklands College between 2009 – 2012, she developed her skill set and worked her way through the industry to now hold the title of Head of Projects at broadcasting company Learn Live UK. We caught up with Lauren to hear her story…
My #BCexperience
I really enjoyed the production and pre-production side of the course as this really helped develop my organisational skills. Having real life experience with the technology, systems and equipment really helped my knowledge in my current role. I also learnt how to conduct myself in a professional environment and more so, recording studios and on site filming. This is something you are somewhat expected to know before starting your career so to learn all this during my time at Brooklands College really set me apart from the other applicants. The teachers also have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry to learn from.
I always had an interest in technology and enjoyed working with anything digital. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and now, almost 10 years later, I am using all the knowledge I learned during my course from production, camera shots and editing. I had a great experience during my time at Brooklands College and still keep in touch with some of my teachers.
Working in Media
After college I attended UCLAN and graduated with a degree in Events Management. During this time I was working as a wedding planner and raising my then 6 month old son. After a few years working for some of the biggest hotel brands in the world, I decided I needed a change. In October of 2018 I found Learn Live. Learn Live works with businesses and individuals to promote their key messages into schools and the wider community using online LIVE broadcasting.
In December of 2019, along with my Managing Director, we created Jobs Live. The broadcasts can be customized to showcase an organisation’s vacancies and profile, provide live video feeds and live jobs, and have running commentary from our studios to review the latest job opportunities available across the UK. The aim of both channels is to educate, inspire and connect.
No day is the same for me really, but as Head of Projects I also manage our team of 10 to ensure tasks are completed for upcoming / current projects. I liaise with each department and team member to pull together everything we need whether it be video content, editing requirements, a sound test, a recording or writing a script.
My Advice
Make the most of the opportunity. You will be taught by such fantastic teachers who have great connections in the working world and can really help you to elevate yourself. I did not take part in any additional work experience during my time at Brooklands College, looking back now I really wished I had used those connections while I was there as it really helps you down the line.
