The Spring Read

Welcome to week two of our new blog!

Spring Reading Challenge
In February, the LRC received an email from the Reading Agency to say that we’d been successful in a bid to win multiple copies of the book ‘Things a bright girl can do’ by Sally Nicholls to give away to some of our students on World Book Night on Thursday April 23rd.

In conjunction with this, we had decided to set a small reading challenge. We designed displays and posters to adorn the LRC, and printed forms ready to hand out to willing staff and students. But with the closure of the College building and the nationwide lockdown, delivery of the books is on hold. All is not lost, however, as we’ve decided to adapt it all to be an online challenge during lockdown. With a government mandate to stay home and stay safe, now is a perfect time to get reading! Review: The Man I think I know by Mike Gayle

I really enjoyed reading this book – which I borrowed from our own Brooklands College LRC.

Mike Gayle’s novel contains lots of insightful ideas about male friendship, family relationships and how people survive tragedy in their lives.

It tells the story of James DeWitt and Danny Allen and chapters are written in the first person but alternate between each character. Both men have experienced profound tragedies in their lives but their growing friendship and support for each other helps them to understand that life still has a lot to offer them.

The main characters are so believable that the reader cares about them and wants things to turn out well for them both. There are only a few clues at the beginning of the novel as to what life changing tragedies have befallen each character but their secrets gradually emerge as the story unfolds.

This book is both engaging and moving and you won’t want to put it down.
