From Work Experience to Apprenticeship

The Hill Group and the Laurelwood Place project team have been working closely with local schools and colleges in the local area to promote careers in the industry and provide opportunities on the Laurelwood Place project.

One of the ways they have supported local students is the rolling placement agreement established with Brooklands College. The Hill Group have provided 1 week placements for students studying at the College giving them the opportunity to enhance the skills they’ve been learning, and apply these to a live construction project.

Brooklands College student, Harry, spent one week on the project with J’L O’Rourke & Sons. They were so impressed with his work ethic and motivation, that after completing his work experience J’L O’Rouke offered him an apprenticeship!

Harry is 16 years old and after seeing his dad working in the industry he knew an apprenticeship would be a great fit for him.

Harry works 4 days a week at the Lauelwood Place development and attends Brooklands College once a week on an apprenticeship framework and will be working towards a Level 3 qualification.

I’ve enjoyed it at the Laurelwood Place project, from the kind members of staff to the hardworking trades on site.
I have learnt so much from being here. I’d like to work hard and become and qualified carpenter and one day become a manger on site.
– Harry
