For National T Levels Week, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about these technical qualifications, so you can make the right decision for your future career…
What are T Levels?
T Levels are a relatively new 2-year qualification, launched in September 2020, combining classroom learning with real-world experience. Considered the new standard in technical education, T Levels focus on developing technical skills to equip students with the knowledge and hands-on experience employers demand.
Who can study T Levels?
T Levels are designed for 16-19-year-olds who want to earn a qualification focusing on a specific industry such as construction, engineering, digital, education or healthcare.
What’s the different between T Levels and A Levels?
The biggest difference for T Levels, and what sets them apart from other 16-19 qualifications, is the collaboration with employers. Unlike A Levels, which focus on academic study, or apprenticeships, which are mainly work-based, T Levels offer a balanced approach. You’ll spend 80% of your time in college learning the theory and then applying it in the other 20% on a real-world industry placement (minimum 45 days).
This means that once you have completed your 2 years, not only will you have earnt the equivalent to 3 A levels, but you will be equipped with practical skills and work experience to help you progress onto an apprenticeship, into further education or start your career.
What GCSEs do you need for a T Level course?
To be accepted onto a T Level course, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 9-4, including both English and maths. For Health T Levels, a minimum of grade 4 in GCSE Science is also needed.
If you have not achieved a grade 4 or above in English and maths, you will be required to re-sit these alongside your course.
Are T Levels the same as BTECs?
No. Although they are both level 3 qualifications, equivalent to 3 A Levels, they differ in several ways. T Levels are more industry-specific, aimed at providing a clear route into skilled employment or higher education within a chosen sector. Whereas BTECs are widely available across a range of subjects, they may not have the same level of specialisation or industry alignment. Both qualifications take 2 years to complete, however, unlike T Levels, BTECs typically do not require a formal industry placement.
