Yesterday, Leo and Will from Weybridge Library visited our Ashford campus with a pop-up booth in The Hub to encourage our students to join the library’s membership programme and access their countless selection of free services. One service in particularly high demand and significance, Theory Test Pro, is the perfect tool for aspiring drivers. Students can prepare for their theory tests for free, for up to 2 hours every day with their library membership.
The Weybridge Library team hosted a similar engagement event at our Fresher’s week earlier in the year, which was incredibly popular. In an interview, Will described many of the services that the library offers, such as: Press Reader – a free app included in your library membership that provides access to daily newspaper subscriptions, space and venue hire, printing services, IT assistance with their ‘Digital Buddy’ sessions, as well as many events and activities throughout the year, including craft days, book clubs and creative writing workshops.
While discussing the roadblocks in promoting the libraries services to students, Will explained the outdated perception of library spaces: “I think there’s still a perception that libraries are silent places, where everyone is forced to be quiet. With the amount of rhymetime family events, its rarer to be quiet. There’s still a place for that here, but be gone are the scary librarian days”.
As a staple in the community, the library team really wanted to emphasise the endless possibilities that the library holds as a communal space, hosting a multitude of events throughout the year. They have also recently launched their ‘Library of Things’ scheme where members can choose from a selection of tools to borrow for DIY projects. Working with Surrey County Council, the team also helped with Surrey’s newest climate change strategy by planting 1.2 million new trees by 2030 – that’s one new tree for every Surrey resident!
Signing up is simple and free for all students; all you will need is proof of address. If you visit one of these pop-up events at either of our campuses, you can use your student ID to sign up. When the Library team are off campus, please head over to your local Surrey County Council library with your proof of address to claim your free membership! However please note, students who are under 18 will need to be accompanied by their adult guardian.
