Visit from local MP

Dr Ben Spencer MP for Runnymede and Elmbridge visited Brooklands College last week to support the opening of the new Employability and Learning Hub.

This flexible learning space, supported by Elmbridge Borough Council and the ESFA is  located on the Weybridge site. It provides a central resource for a number of services; access to Careers advice and guidance, the work placement team, the Youth Hub and an area for independent study and a shared space for workshop delivery.

Elmbridge Borough Council provided their reasons for supporting the project by saying “ The Employability and Learning Hub will provide accommodation which is aligned to employer skills requirements promoting employment and economic growth, supporting the EBC priority of supporting local Businesses and Partnership working.”

Dr Ben Spencer MP commented: ‘It was a pleasure to attend the opening of Brooklands College Employability and Learning Hub. We are very fortunate to have this fantastic space which is bringing together the college, employers and those seeking work, creating greater opportunities and helping students and businesses obtain the skills they need. The Elmbridge and Runnymede Youth Hub, also located on site, is going from strength to strength and recently announced that they are supporting over 50 young people to get into work.  I hope that this combined positive approach to skills, learning and employment can be an example of best practice across Surrey and beyond.’

Following the official opening, he took time to talk with Andrew Baird, Chairman Of Governor at the College and visited the Engineering department where Alan Wells, Head of Learning for Engineering explained the history of Engineering at Brooklands and the different areas covered: Motor Vehicle, Motor Sport, Manufacturing and Aeronautical.

We look forward to welcoming Ben back to the College to learn about the other industry areas the college specialises in, he even mentioned taking part in a practical session and learning a new skill!
