Ready, steady, cook! – Navy Catering Service

On December 3rd, our Catering students had the exciting opportunity to participate in an interactive session with the Navy Catering Service. The highlight of the visit was a culinary competition, where students, who were placed into pairs, were tasked with preparing a two-course meal by strictly following a set recipe.

With only an hour and thirty minutes to complete their meal, each pair had to work as a team to create a set menu; chicken kiev with fondant potatoes as their main dish, followed by a chocolate brownie topped with whipped cream for dessert. The challenge tested their ability to work efficiently as a team, implement a range of cooking techniques, and present their dishes with creativity and finesse.

Once the cooking was complete, the judges, including the student’s tutor – Paul, and our guest from the Navy Catering Service, carefully assessed each dish, considering taste, presentation, and adherence to the recipe. After a thorough assessment of all the final entries, a winning pair was selected based on their outstanding performance.

Beyond the competitive spirit, this session provided students with invaluable insights into the high standards and expectations of professional catering within the Navy. The visit proved to be an inspiring and enriching experience, encouraging students to refine their culinary skills and strive for excellence in their cooking. The Navy Catering Service will be back next year to continue their work with our students, across all levels.
