MP Visit

We were delighted to welcome the MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, Dr Ben Spencer to Brooklands College last Friday.

As part of his commitment to education, Ben supports Further Education and the importance of vocational qualifications and apprenticeships. He visited the college to get a real insight into the courses and even took part in some lessons, spending time in the Engineering, Media and Catering departments.

First stop was the Electric Vehicle Training Centre, which provides the skills and knowledge required to maintain and repair Electric and Hybrid vehicles. As carbon reduction remains high on the Government’s agenda, training in this area is now an essential part of the college’s motor vehicle courses and ensures students are workplace ready.

In the catering department’s professional kitchen Ben made garlic bread, alongside students from a local school, who come to Brooklands on day release to try a vocational course. In the media department, the students put their skills to the test, with student Emmie Smith interviewing the local MP in the College’s TV green screen room.

Ben commented “I really enjoyed the opportunity to experience first-hand some of the courses Brooklands has to offer. From learning how to prepare to safely disconnect a battery from an EV, to brushing up my cooking skills and being interviewed by local students, I was incredibly impressed by the skill and enthusiasm of all involved. Brooklands offers a great range of training opportunities, at a range of levels to suit everyone.”
