About this course

What is the course about?

For your first year of study you can expect to focus on the application of practical skills and experiment within different art and design disciplines. Workshops are delivered in architecture design, graphic and concept design, animation and digital methods of production, 3D, product and packaging design, photography, surface pattern design, fashion and interior design, illustration, drawing and painting and critical and contextual awareness. You will develop a critical, reflective approach through discussion and journals and will generate self-directed projects for exhibition. Towards the end of year one and two, students will be able to develop their skills within a more specialist pathway. The course is further enhanced with trips and visits to museums and galleries, competitions and live briefs and work experience.

Where will I be studying?

Careers related to Design are really popular as it impacts on everything we see around us from adverts to shop window displays to websites.  Our courses will help you find where your art and design skills lie and you will study in our attractive purpose built studios.

Facilities include specialist studios and workshops in Textiles, Graphic Design, 3D/Sculpture, Fine Art, Printmaking, Photography and a very contemporary Apple Mac suite.

The annual end of year exhibition includes a fantastic fashion show and an art exhibition for students to showcase their designs.  Our art and design courses have an excellent reputation and many of our students go on to gain places at the top universities or secure careers in the industry.

Who is the course suitable for?

These courses are ideal if you enjoy art and design and prefer a more practical route of study.

How is the course assessed?

All the units are internally assessed through project work.

Are there any extra costs?

You will need a USB stick. In addition there will be an annual voluntary studio contribution of £100.  There are several visits to London galleries and local workshops made throughout the course to support the vocational context of the qualification.  You will be allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications will I need?

5 GCSE passes grade 4 or above (ideally including English and maths, and Art & Design at grade 6 or above).

For progressing students you must have achieved a Level 2 vocational qualification in an art related subject.

You will also need to provide a portfolio of art and design work at interview. If you don’t have a portfolio you may be asked to complete a practical task to make sure the course is a good match for you.

Next Steps

Students can progress from the Diploma to the Extended Diploma, this includes external applicants. Progression from the Extended Diploma is further study at higher education in areas such as graphic design, advertising, architecture, interior design, jewellery design, photography, textile and fashion design, arts management, or employment in a wide range of roles in the design industry.
