    You will be working with light motor vehicles (cars) and have access to removing, repairing, replacing and testing components. This will give you on the job experience in working in a mechanical workshop.

    Course Details

    What will the course involve?

    To gain the full apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:

    • Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths, English

    Mandatory units:

    • Skills and Knowledge in Health and Safety
    • Skills and Knowledge in materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices
    • Skills and Knowledge in supporting roles in the automotive industry
    • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults
    • Skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis
    • Skills and knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle
    • Skills and Knowledge of diagnosing and rectifying of vehicle auxiliary and electrical faults

    Entry Requirements

    What qualifications will I need?

    Apprentices that have completed the Level 2 apprenticeship can usually progress to carry out the Level 3 apprenticeship.

    You will need to demonstrate an interest in working in the motor vehicle sector. All applicants applying for an apprenticeship will be required to attend an interview and undertake initial assessments.

    If you have achieved a Level 2 motor vehicle full-time course, you will be assessed prior to starting an apprenticeship on your practical experience. If sufficient practical experience is demonstrated, then you may do the Level 3 apprenticeship, however most in this position will undertake the Level 2 apprenticeship first.

    Assessment

    How will I be assessed?

    You will attend day release at college one day a week over one academic year. You will be assessed in the workplace by an assessor and your attendance at college. During your assessments targets will be set to ensure that you complete your apprenticeship on time. If you have achieved Grade C or above in Maths, English and ICT (or Grade 4 or above on the new grading scheme), you will not be required to undertake Functional Skills. If you have achieved less than these grades, you will be required to achieve a minimum Level 2 Functional Skills prior to or during the apprenticeship. These will be assessed through external examinations and workshops.

    On successful completion of this qualification you could progress to other roles including light vehicle diagnostic technician, motorcycle diagnostic technician, auto electrical diagnostic technician, mobile electrical installation diagnostic technician. Alternatively you could progress with the right qualifications and experience to become an MOT tester. Typical starting salary once qualified £15,000
