On 30th September 2021, we were delighted to hold the official opening event for Brooks Hair & Beauty in Ashford, Surrey. The department and the college have been very pleased to see the building and development of the brand new salon located on Ashford High Street over the past year.

We’ve had a fantastic start to the new academic year, especially after the ongoing challenges of the COVID pandemic. There is now a happy buzz on campus once more with learners able to develop their skills in practical training as well as safely socialise with each other.

The Welsh Guards kindly visited our Level 3 and our HNC students in the recent term. The aim of their visit was to further the students' knowledge regarding surveillance and techniques along with understanding the correct protocol for operating during a surveillance stint.

As part of their land-based activities unit, Uniformed Public Services students headed over to Woking Archery Club in the recent term. Throughout their course students are expected to practice key characteristics such as leadership, discipline, strategic planning, coordination, teamwork and a plethora of other skills which are required in this line of work.

It’s that time of the year where our Business students participate in The Big Idea Challenge, an enterprise initiative by London Metropolitan University. Over the course of a few months, students across the UK get involved and compete in multiple stages across the competition with the aim to progress and build on their ideas.

Commencing  on 19th January and ending on 30th April, the challenge was for our students and staff to walk 101 miles each over 101 days and raise money for the NHS. The project also aimed to improve morale amongst College members and to help everyone keep fit and healthy during the national lockdown.

Across the recent weeks, students and staff have been working hard to revitalise our onsite allotment to be able to put it to good use. Students got stuck in by weeding, cutting the grass, painting beds as well as generally cleaning and tidying the area.

Meet 21 year old Cameron Flynn, a Catering & Hospitality student at Brooklands College looking to make a positive impact in his community... Cameron first became aware of a bizarre occurrence in the local Elmbridge area in early Spring of which someone had been chopping down trees at night leaving community members puzzled.

Since 19th January, our students and staff have been walking every day with a number of intentions including: feeling united as a college whilst remote working; staying physically fit & mentally healthy during lockdown; and raising money for the NHS. We are now on the home stretch with our end date of 30th April in sight.

As part of their qualification, this week our SEND & Transition students have been tasked to plan and organise a few fundraising activities for Red Nose Day, Comic Relief. It is a great opportunity for the students to make a positive contribution to the community and raise a smile or two.

Throughout February, Level 3 Media student Thomas has been taking on a virtual work experience placement with the well-renowned music streaming company Spotify. During the placement, he has been creating daily audio notes discussing his progress.

Motorsport Engineering is an exciting subject to choose here at Brooklands College. Our courses provide learners with specialised skills and knowledge in fault rectification & diagnostics, engineering design and motorsport preparation & inspection. Many of our students progress onto working in the industry with various racing teams, one of which includes the West Surrey Racing.

Whilst remote learning, Level 3 Media student Chloe has created a multiplane camera setup at home. As part of her course assignment, Chloe has discussed this unique camera in depth explaining how it changed animation history.  She also conducted a series of experiments with her multiplane camera setup and compared this to Photoshop animation.

The Child Studies department is very proud to announce that the winner of the 2019 - 2020 Christine Lawless Creative Practitioner Prize conferred by Kingston University has been won by Laura Davies, who completed her Level 5 Special Educational Needs and Inclusive Practice Foundation Degree in June 2020 at Brooklands College proudly gaining a Distinction.

During lockdown, Ruby found another rewarding hobby - sewing masks for the NHS. “I was involved with a group of seamstresses who initially made PPE for keyworkers and then we made masks which were sold at local retailers.
