Slow Pedagogy Exhibition

This week, our Level 5 Early Years students hosted an engaging exhibition at Stepgate Community School in Chertsey, offering a fascinating exploration of the concept of Slow Pedagogy. The exhibition was designed to invite attendees into a deeper understanding of child-centred learning, focusing on the importance of valuing the present moment and creating opportunities for children to go deeper into their learning.

The exhibit included a wealth of information and an interactive task that challenged the traditional norms of learning. One of the key themes discussed was the impact of outcome-based learning and how it can limit a child’s ability to explore and create freely. The students encouraged visitors to rethink the emphasis on results and instead appreciate the process of learning.

An example of this was seen in a creative task where children were asked to “make a bird out of pinecones and feathers.” The idea was to question whether the focus should be on producing 30 perfectly crafted birds or on the learning and creativity that emerges during the crafting process. Slow Pedagogy invites educators to ask the question, “What can you create?” instead of pushing for a specific outcome. This approach allows children to face challenges, make mistakes, and problem-solve, creating a richer learning experience that emphasises growth and discovery.

The exhibition also serves as a valuable component of the students’ final grade, which will be assessed by Kingston University. This collaboration with Brooklands Technical College ensures that the exhibition reflects both academic rigour and hands-on learning.

Julia Chaplin, a lecturer on the course, praised the efforts of the students, stating “The students worked extremely hard on this exhibition and it is wonderful to see it come to life.” The success of the event was clear. Many Level 4 Early Years students were in attendance as guests too. They were able to observe and learn from their peers, gaining valuable insights and tips that will aid them in preparing for their own exhibition next year.

The event was a significant opportunity for our Level 5 students to showcase their knowledge and understanding of Slow Pedagogy while contributing to their academic progress. It also provided a platform for collaboration and learning, making it a memorable and impactful experience for all involved.
